Suburn Facts & Treatment
Sunburn is a very well known condition that many people suffer from durring the hottest parts of the year. Sunburn is a type of radiation damage done by the sun. It is usually experienced through redness of the skin in the affected area and usually is accompanied by swelling - all caused by over-exposure to the damaging UV effects of the sun.
Minor burns can occur very quickly - quicker than we often think. All it takes is as little as ten – 15 mins especially if you have not applied sunscreen or covered up.
Symptoms will vary depending on the length of sun exposure and intensity. Sunburn is very common and symptoms include your skin feeling hot to the touch
The pain of sunburn is usually greatest between 6 and 48 hours after exposure. If the sunburn is severe and blisters occur, consult your physician right away.
The radiation that causes sunburn is UV radiation (or Ultra Violet radiation) that comes directly from the sun. When the amount of sun’s exposure, or other UV light source, exceeds the ability of the skins protecting pigment – known as melanin, sunburn occurs.
Protection from the sun is crucial because sunburn syptoms are basically the result of not protecting yourself adequately.
Sunburn Danger
For some of us, sunburn is viewed as only a temporary annoyance and as a nornal occurrance, however it can be potenially harmful. People who get sunburned may face an increased risk of skin cancer (squamous cancer of the skin or basal skin cancer) and also for skin damage by the sun.
Fever or raised temperature, chills, feeling nauseous and bouts of vomiting can occur if the sunburn is serious and acute. It may also be serious if the worst of the symptoms do not improve after 12 hours.
If you do experience these symptoms, you should seek advise from your doctor or health practitioner.
Sunburn is only the first indication of UV over-exposure. Those who have never been sun-burnt can still develop the delayed problems such as cancer of the skin and the sun-related skin problems for example saggy skin and deeply channeled lines.
Sunburn and Nutrition
Sunburn is also been shown to be worsened by nutritional deficiencies that leave the skin vulnerable to DNA mutations from radiation.
An oral food supplement containing Polypodium leucotomas (such as Heliocare) may provide additional oral photo-protection and reduce sunburn. Scientific studies have been conducted that show this natural substance can cause a natural resistance to sunburn.
Prevention & Protection
The best way to prevent sunburn is to avoid sun exposure. A sunscreen with SPF factor of 30+ is recommended as well as clothing and wide-brimmed headwear and sunglasses. The hours between 10am to 3pm are particularly risky when it comes to sun exposure.
Probably all heath practioners share the same view that there is no such thing as a safe tan, however burns from the sun are unusually problematic to the epidermis and may bring about pain, blisters, swollen areas and damage to the skin that is longterm.
Treatment
Treating sunbrrn: Sunburn (most of the time) will disappear as the body heals itself and usually will do so within a few weeks. Treatment is identical to that received by other burn patients, including steroids and fluid replacement.
Oral supplementation is not for treatment but rather for prevention like Heliocare Oral, but should still be taken with other protective measures such as sunscreen and protective clothing including headwear and sunglasses.
